Availability in Action
Imagine that someone says, “I felt dismissed by you in that meeting.”
At first, the words reach you.
Then disruption begins. Your body tightens. You remember everything you did to include them. Your identity as a considerate person feels threatened. You begin explaining your intentions.
You are still speaking with them, but they can no longer reach you.
Later, perhaps, you notice what happened. You recognize that your explanation protected something important, but it also prevented you from understanding their experience.
Return might sound like:
“I noticed that I started defending myself. I’m not yet sure I agree with everything you said, but I do want to understand what happened for you. Would you be willing to tell me again?”
Nothing guarantees where the conversation will lead. But contact has become possible again.
And with contact, a different kind of participation becomes possible.
Notice the Movement in Your Own Life
You might begin with one recent moment:
What was trying to reach me?
Where did I feel contact narrowing?
What was my closure protecting?
Could I see it while it was happening?
What helped—or might help—me return?
What kind of participation could become possible from there?
The Availability Snapshot offers a structured way to explore this movement across perception, emotion, relationship, body, and identity.
