Welcome to The Human Maturity Practice Community
Human maturity is the increasing stability of our availability to participate more fully in life. Not permanent openness — nobody manages that. The marker is the gap. How long between the thing that closes you and the return.
I have been watching that gap in rooms : in senior public servants, in leaders carrying more than they say, in myself. The Human Maturity Institute is where I am working that out in the open, and membership is how you come inside the inquiry rather than reading about it afterwards.
Some of you are here to follow the research. Some to build the practice in your own life. Some to bring it into work you already do with others. There is a tier for each.
What I will say plainly: this is not a finished framework delivered in modules. The theory is still moving, and members shape it — your observations become part of what I am studying. That makes this less polished than a course and more useful than one.
Here is what I can promise. I have spent twenty years alongside people in the moment they were deciding whether to stay open or close — in coaching conversations, in classrooms, on stage delivering keynotes, in the workplace, in boardrooms, in ceremonies, and sometimes in my own kitchen at 2am. I know that terrain. I cannot walk your stretch of it for you, and I would not trust anyone who offered to. But I can see it clearly, and I will stay with you until you can see it for yourself. The tiers below are different ways in.
Participation Options
For those here for the research. You're curious about the theory of human maturity — what it means to stay available to what's real, and to return to openness after disruption — and follow the inquiry as it develops.
For those ready to expand their own availability to participate more fully in life. Everything in Read & Learn, plus a rhythm of practice and contact — with the material and with dr. akasha.
For those whose role is supporting other people's growth — educators, facilitators, coaches, leaders. Everything in Practice & Grow, plus direct developmental support and the tools to bring this work into your own practice with others.
What You'll Experience
Availability Practice Lab
Who this is for
People who already know their pattern and have nowhere to work it. That is the usual case. You have read your Snapshot report, or you have simply lived long enough to know where you close — and the problem is not insight. It is that nothing in your ordinary week asks you to practise, and nobody in it will tell you the truth about what they saw.
It suits people whose lives put them in rooms where staying open is genuinely costly. Leaders carrying decisions. Clinicians and teachers. People in a marriage or a friendship where the same gap keeps opening. Anyone in a position where closing is both the efficient move and the expensive one.
If you develop other people for a living — coach, facilitator, therapist, manager — you are welcome here as a participant, not as a practitioner. Bring your own material, not your clients'.
You do not need to have taken the Availability Snapshot. It gives you a place to start, and most people arrive with one, but the work is done on what happens in the room.
This is not a course and there is no curriculum to complete. It is not therapy and not a substitute for it. If you are in the middle of something acute, this is not the room for it, and I would rather say so now than have you discover it in a breakout.
How it works
Reading about availability will not change your availability. That is not how capacity works. It comes from noticing something as it happens, in company, and getting honest feedback on what you noticed.
Each month we take one thing — a domain, a pattern, a specific kind of closure — and work it. I open with the concept, briefly, because you need somewhere to stand. Then we practise. Then we sit with what happened.
A typical session runs roughly:
Fifteen minutes of framing. What we are working with this month and why it matters. Short. The point is not the teaching.
Forty-five minutes of practice. In pairs and small groups, on your own material — a conversation that went sideways, a moment you closed and did not know why, a relationship where the gap keeps opening. You practise. I move between groups and offer coaching in the moment.
Thirty minutes of integration. Back together. What surfaced, what surprised you, what you are taking into the month. Some of this is quiet.
What you cannot get alone
Two things happen here that cannot happen alone.
The first is that you are seen mid-practice, not after. Most of us edit our own account of what happened before anyone hears it. In a lab, someone sees you close in real time and can say so kindly.
The second is the company. There is a particular relief in discovering that other capable people also lose their footing, also close, also take longer to come back than they would like. That relief is not a side effect. It is part of what makes the return faster next time.
Come with something real. That is the only preparation.

Practicalities
$125 a month, or $1,250 a year — ten months for twelve. This is the Practice & Grow membership above.
This is the founding rate. It is held for as long as your membership runs unbroken, including at annual renewal. Later members will pay more. That is not a discount and not a deadline; it is what I owe people who commit to a room before it has proved itself.
Capped at 24. The cap exists so that I can reach every group during the practice hour — a working limit, not a scarcity device.
Opens Thursday 15 October 2026, then the second Thursday of every month from November — 12 November, 10 December, and on.
7:00–8:30pm Eastern · 4:00pm Pacific · 8:00pm Atlantic and Grenada (7:00pm for the October session, before the US clock change)
Online. Sessions are not recorded.
Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about HMI membership, the three levels of participation, what to expect, and how to choose the level that best reflects your present interest, capacity, and desire to participate.
-
HMI membership is an invitation to participate in a living inquiry into human maturity: how we become more steadily available to reality, relationship, responsibility, change, love, and life itself. Members can engage at the depth that fits their present interest and capacity—from learning about the work, to actively practicing it, to helping steward its development and wider impact.
-
Choose the level that reflects how you want to participate right now:
Read & Learn is for those who want to explore the ideas, research, field notes, and emerging theory of human maturity.
Practice & Grow is for those who want to apply the work through practices, guided reflection, learning experiences, and community.
Steward & Transform is for those who want to deepen their own practice while helping carry the work into organizations, communities, institutions, and the wider world.
You do not need to begin with the first level. Start where you feel most genuinely called to participate.
-
No. They represent different forms and depths of participation, not a ranking of people or a measure of anyone’s maturity. Someone may have extensive developmental experience and choose Read & Learn, while another person may feel ready to contribute actively through Steward & Transform. The question is not, “Which level makes me more advanced?” but, “How am I available to participate at this time?”
-
No. The inquiry into human maturity belongs to all of us. Some members may be coaches, educators, leaders, therapists, facilitators, or researchers. Others may simply be people who want to understand themselves more deeply and participate more fully in their relationships, work, communities, and lives. Curiosity and a willingness to notice your experience are enough places to begin.
-
That depends on the level you choose and how fully you wish to engage. Read & Learn can be largely self-directed. Practice & Grow invites more regular practice and participation. Steward & Transform involves a deeper commitment to the inquiry, the community, and the work’s expression in the world. Membership is intended to support your participation in life—not become another obligation competing with it.
-
Yes. Availability changes across seasons of life. You may want to begin by learning, become ready for more active practice, or later feel called to steward the work. You may also need to step back during a demanding season. Moving between levels is not a failure or promotion; it is an honest response to your present capacity and desired participation.
-
Yes. Paid memberships are billed monthly, and you may cancel at any time. Your cancellation will take effect before your next billing cycle, so you will not be charged again. You will continue to have access to your membership benefits through the end of your current paid period.
-
Stewardship does not mean having all the answers or being fully mature. It means accepting some responsibility for the conditions that help maturity become possible—for yourself, for others, and within the systems you influence. Steward & Transform members help hold the inquiry, contribute observations and learning, support the community, and explore how this work might serve families, organizations, schools, communities, the Caribbean, and the wider world.
