What happens to our participation when we become more—or less—available to what is real?

This theory and the Availability Snapshot are the independent work of The Human Maturity Institute. They were developed outside the author's faculty role at Cultivating Leadership and are not the work product of that or any other organization.

The Availability Snapshot, and elements of this paper, has developed through ongoing dialogue with Dr. Susanne Cook-Greuter, a pioneer in adult development, creator of the Leadership Maturity Framework and the Maturity Assessment Profile, and my mentor of ten years.

Many of us have sat across from someone who understood every word and was not reached by any of it. And some of us have been that person, more often than we would like, and usually without knowing it at the time.

This white paper gathers observations from years of developmental practice, leadership work, relationship, spiritual inquiry, and my own repeated encounters with opening and closure. It begins with something I have seen in myself and others: we can understand something without allowing it to reach us. We can hear without receiving, notice without being affected, and know without letting what we know change how we participate.

The paper proposes that availability is an essential, though not exhaustive, dimension of human maturity. Availability is our developing capacity to be reached and affected by what is happening within us, between us, and around us; to let that contact inform our participation without surrendering agency; and to find our way back after contact is disrupted.

This is not an argument for permanent openness. Human beings close. Sometimes closure is protective, discerning, and necessary. The developmental question is not simply whether we remain open, but whether we can notice our openings and closings, understand what they protect, take responsibility for their consequences, and move toward a fitting form of participation.

The theory remains young. It has not been peer reviewed or empirically validated. I am sharing it because ideas about human development should remain available to the people, experiences, cultures, and evidence that may deepen, trouble, or change them.

I invite you to read the paper against the texture of your own life. Notice where it helps you see more clearly, where it fails to account for what you know, and what becomes possible when reality is allowed to reach you.
